Me

My first memory of Peter Pan collars is when I was a little boy in the mid 1960s, a time when they were very popular on clothes - dresses, blouses, coats and nightwear - for both girls and women. I had an older sister who wore them extremely frequently, as did her friends, who frequently came to our house. My mother and her female friends also wore them very often.

For some reason they always held a deep fascination for me, and I used to wonder why my clothes didn’t have Peter Pan collars (I have a photo of me aged 2 wearing a coat with a little velvet Peter Pan collar - but that was the nearest I ever came to being allowed to wear them). I distinctly remember so desperately wanting to have them on my clothes.

The Peter Pan collar is the perfect collar. There simply is no better style of collar. It is the perfect shape, and it frames the face beautifully.

A few years ago I started collecting Peter Pan collared items - shirts, blouses, dresses, nightwear - some that fit me, and which I can wear; others that are too small, but which I love to collect anyway, so that I can just look at them and admire them. I now have over 50 garments with Peter Pan collars - mostly dresses and blouses... and still collecting.

There is no other style of collar that comes anywhere near as appealing as a Peter Pan collar.

I remember visiting Laura Ashley stores in the late 1970s / early 1980s and seeing so many Peter Pan collared dresses and blouses - it was heaven! A lot of the dresses were in velvet - another of my passions.

Laura Ashley have recently launched an Archive Collection featuring clothing based on their 1960s and 1970s styles... but alas, no Peter Pan collars!
